Want to commit? Get equity out of the box
In education we have a tendency to look at things as “initiatives.” Some things should be realized as such; when they are short lived and are specific building blocks towards long term goals. But some things aren’t initiatives they are ways of being.
Here’s the thing: Equity is the latter. Equity is a way of being. You either are all in and committed or you aren’t.
There is really no in between.
Earlier this week a lively discussion occurred among educators committed to equity. Among the lessons learned from that discussion:
- Silence means something
- Actions speak louder than words
- Real change don’t happen unless leaders are intentional and clear in their expectations
- Systems must change
- Constant and committed attention to equity is a must
In the last ten years we have seen equity move from a “sidebar” conversation in education to a common and needed thread. This work has however been sporadic in its impact. After talking with equity leaders over the past few years about what is holding their collective impact at bay, I can say without a doubt there is one main barrier:
Too often our top school leaders aren’t fully willing to commit.
