I Stand with Teachers.

Some friends and I went to the statehouse in November in support of our teachers. Along with me were two nine year olds; both of whom love their teachers. After defrosting my toes, having some wine, and sitting on this experience throughout the holidays here is what I want everyone to know.

Let’s treat teachers like professionals.

There were two stories I heard that day. The first story went like this. “We got a message from our superintendent that said, November 19th is a teacher work day. You can work in your classroom or you can choose to go to the statehouse. You all advocate for kids every day. I trust you to make the choice.” The second story on the other end of the spectrum went like this, “well I took a personal day because my professional day request was denied, but the teachers back at school had to report for “attendance” so that the principals could report anyone that was absent.” Tell me, which district would you want to work for? And which district do you think has better overall morale? The one with a more empowered leadership style, or the one that was more attune to control and monitoring? I know what our teachers are saying, and it matters more than you know. Too many district leaders lost the trust of their teachers that day. Yet some did what is best for kids. Some district leaders empowered their teachers, earned their trust, and sat in awe of the advocacy of the professionals with whom they work.
