Every community has their moment, this might just be ours.

I’ve worked in education for a long time. While some call me an expert, I (like so many others in the field) just do what we do for the love of the work. We don’t have hidden agendas or big scheming plans, its our profession and at the end of the day we want one thing…

To help make good things happen for all of our kids.

Throughout the country it is school board election season. And what was once a local fare of parents and leaders doing their part to serve local schools has now become a contentious and fueled race to “save our kids.

With partisan arguments and us/them diatribe, I am truly concerned about the future of this thing we call school.

I am not writing this to argue with those that truly believe public education is vile. (My words won’t change that deep seeded belief). I am not writing this to say education is a perfectly woven tapestry (we all know that is a fairy tale).

I am writing this because I am a parent of amazing kids who deserve schools to rise up to their level of creativity, innovation, gumption, grit, and kindness. I want our schools to be safe havens, that welcome diversity, nurture critical thinking, and give voice to our kids (who, by the way are much better than us adults in so many ways).
